Tehran urges IAEA to refrain from exceeding legal framework

TEHRAN - The Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran has emphasized that any requests made by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) must adhere to the legal framework established by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Safeguards Agreement.

Requests that do not align with these agreements would not be within the scope of the UN nuclear agency's authority in its interactions with Iran, Mohammad Eslami said during a press conference on Sunday.

The nuclear chief underscored that under the two agreements, the IAEA's mandate is to supervise, support, and encourage Iran's nuclear activities within its defined framework.

Eslami's comments come in response to a recent resolution by the IAEA Board of Governors, which emphasized the agency's crucial role in verifying Iran's compliance with its safeguards obligations. The resolution also urged Iran to fully cooperate with the IAEA to clarify and resolve outstanding safeguards issues.

However, Eslami insisted on Sunday that any request from the IAEA must be made within the context of the established cooperative framework. “There is not any other subject that the Agency may intend to pursue,” he stated.

Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is peaceful and that it is committed to fulfilling its obligations under the NPT. While Iran has expressed a willingness to resolve differences with the IAEA, it has clarified multiple times that it would not tolerate demands that exceed the legal framework established by the international treaties.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson previously emphasized the country's commitment to resolving disputes with the IAEA. When asked about the IAEA's installation of new cameras at Iran's nuclear sites last month, Nasser Kanaani stated that "Iran's firm stance is to address issues with the (IAEA)." He further emphasized that Iran is resolute in preventing matters related to its peaceful nuclear activities from escalating into a confrontational process with the IAEA, in line with this policy.
